I can’t go to Coachella this year. It’s true! I’ve been for at least one day every year since 2005. (!) This year I have a wedding weekend one and a professional obligation weekend two. But that won’t stop me from blogging about it at least once.
It’s a good thing this is the year I’m missing because this is the year I really don’t care about the lineup. Usually I defend even the “weak” lineups as being secretly great, but I can’t do that here. I will miss writing for Buzz Bands more than I’ll miss the fest. I don’t much care about LCD. I really don’t care about GNR. Fuck whatever something called Calvin Harris is and everything it stands for.
Here’s how this bill breaks down for me:
Bands I Care About or Am Interested In That I’ve Never Seen
Lush (the big one for me, fingers crossed for a Pomona show)
Bands I Like (Or Kinda Like) I’ve Already Seen (Mostly At Coachella)
Gary Clark Jr
Again? Still? Groan. I guess I’d see it.
Bat for Lashes
Cold War Kids
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes
Matt & Kim
Silversun Pickups (like, their fourth Coachella?)
If I could go, would I have something to see every hour of the day? Probably! Would some of those bands I groan at now turn in mind-blowing sets that challenged my assumptions? Most assuredly. Would I find something cool I didn’t know existed? Yep.
But look at the bucket list: five bands? There used to be fifteen I’d never seen before. Missing especially is the big “Oh, hey!” — thinking The Makeup, Swans, Squeeze… those second-thought bands that turned out to be major moments at the fest. What would that be? Surely not The Vandals. And there’s no obvious 80’s or 90’s standard that make-up my bread and butter. (Moz, New Order, Devo… Pavement, Superchunk, etc.)
No Country for Old Indie Rockers.
