ALBUM REVIEW: Film School – “Fission” (w/ MP3 stream)
The 2007 Film School release Hideout is one of my all-time favorite LA (if by way of San Fran) records and I’m prepared to say that I like Fission a good deal better.

Crashing to Earth from a power pop planet far, far away is Alright Alright,a hook-fueled super sextet from Los Angeles who have dropped one of the surprise delights of 2010.
POLLS celebrated the release of their new EP at the Bootleg Theatre last week. Terrific performance, one of the more enjoyable live shows I’ve seen in recent memory.
I dig this Modern Time Machines track “Dweeb”. It’s got the same combination of fuzzy guitar shoegaze noise and dreampop that makes that one nationally-known Silverlake band (Silverspoon something or other?) so popular.
Leslie Stevens and the Badgers, whom I profiled for Radio Free Silverlake last year, are releasing a 7″ single Los Angeles today on Trailer Fire Records. The single precludes a re-release of a trimmed-tracklist version their Roomful of Smoke LP later this year on Thirty Tigers.
I don’t always go for this sort of thing, but Luke Temple’s latest project Here We Go Magic put out a record, Pigeons, that reminds me of something between Local Natives and Micachu and the Shapes. (A good thing.)
While all manner of Williamsburg girls have been prancing around in 60′s pop princess costumes (and while Dum Dum Girls are humorlessly doing a more grown-up version of the same thing here in LA), Wet & Reckless have taken a broader, less musically strict (read:”more fun”) approach.
Short notice here. Gram Rabbit (one of the very first “local” bands I ever saw in LA, in 2006) is throwing a record release show at The Troubadour tomorrow.
A couple Mondays ago I peeked-in Spaceland to catch the first night of the Summer Darling residency. It was a moving performance featuring a dynamic range of emotions, from seething angst to explosive triumph. I was grinning ear to ear, happy to have some unabashed indie rock for guys who wear clothes that fit.

I’m a dumbass. I thought Rademacher was playing the Les Blanks residency last week, but it’s this week. From last week’s post:
“For more local music money, hit Casey’s for the Les Blanks residency. The ever-awesome Shirley Rolls are playing, as are an all-new (again!) Rademacher lineup. Frontman Malcolm Sosa seems especially enthusiastic about this one. I’m bummed to miss it. This would be my Friday night if I were you.”

Looking for something a bit different? Seamus Simpson, former guitarist to Radars to the Sky, has a new band Smoker’s In Love. They’re playing at the Cat Club. Print the flier for a discount.
I’ve had the roughs of their new EP for a while. Fans of Wire need aply. Got an MP3 for ya:
